Bluebird Houses

Ideal Bluebird habitat is comprised of mixed hardwood forests and grasslands like meadows, pastures or prairies. There should be some power lines, fenceposts or scattered trees in the open, grassy areas for perching. Mount your Bluebird house to a post or pole with the entrance hole 5 to 6 feet above the ground and facing away from the prevailing winds. To decrease competition from tree swallows (who like the same nest box conditions as bluebirds) it is best to pair your Bluebird houses 25 feet apart. Bluebirds will normally occupy one of the houses and the tree swallows will nest in the other without competing with the Bluebirds. Be a good landlord and remember to clean out your Bluebird house at the end of the season by removing the nesting material and scrubing with a mild detergent and water.
