Feeders

Choosing the right bird feeder is about a bit more than convenience. The feeder contributes to the overall appearance of the backyard and many people are primarily concerned about uniqueness. Fortunately, manufacturers have responded to that demand. Research reveals there are numerous unorthodox designs and bird feeder types that correspond to the needs of even the most eccentric individuals.

If you’re looking for something unconventional, the following list of unusual bird feeders will give you some great ideas.

Perky-Pet 305 Holly Berry Gilded Chalet Wild Bird Feeder

The design of this feeder is far from eccentric but the decorations make it look a lot more like a beautiful garden accessory. Perky-Pet 305 looks a lot like a lantern and the oriental motifs make it perfect for the execution of an intricate or rustic landscaping idea.

The gold rustic finish makes the feeder look like something than an archaeologist would uncover after days of intense excavations.

Moving on to the practical characteristics of the product, the feeder has a two-pound seed capacity and a circular perch that allows birds to rest while enjoying their favorite seeds. The Sure Lock cap system developed by Perky-Pet keeps squirrels from accessing the delicious treats,

The feeder is treated with powerful UV inhibitors that protect the gold finish and keep the item in a good condition for years.

Basketweave 2 Hummingbird Feeder

The Basketweave 2 Hummingbird Feeder is made from recycled glass, so it will certainly appeal to the environment-conscious individuals. At the same time, it comes with a truly intriguing design that’s different from the typical saucer or inverted bottle.

The design is inspired by Depression Glass of the 1930s. The two bottles have intricate designs covering all of their sides. These fit into a metal basket that comes with individual perches for hummingbirds to rest on.

Several ports are available, allowing numerous hummingbirds to feed at the same time. Two red floral designs (hand-blown glass) decorate the ports. They are removable for easier cleaning.

MosaicGlassGarden JeweledHues Circle Bird Feeder

People having a bit more eccentric aesthetic sense will probably love this item. The mosaic glass feeder is very colorful, which attracts many different bird species. At the same time, the design is unobtrusive and elegant (a very difficult balance to achieve).

The mosaic-like pieces are made of colored glass. Food is placed in the interior part of the circle. It also provides a place for birds to rest in while enjoying their seeds. The design in itself isn’t that innovative – it’s actually quite practical. The decorative elements, however, make the feeder stand out and turn it in a central piece for every backyard.

GoodDirections Venetian Bronze Moon Crescent Feeder

The name says it all – this wild bird feeder is shaped like a moon crescent. The Good Directions Venetian Bronze feeder features a beautiful Venetian bronze finish that will look beautiful, regardless of the landscaping decisions you’ve made.

The feeder can hold up to four pounds of seeds and the shape encourages birds to perch on the crescent and rest.

An easy to hang item, this feeder measures 17 by 11 by three inches. The sides of the crescent moon are clear, making it easy to keep track of the seed quantity and refill the feeder when necessary.

Good Directions is a company that specializes in unusual designs. There are similar heart-shaped and circular feeders.

Could anything be more adorable than a bird feeder that looks like a miniature, colorful farmhouse? Best Home Products has designed one such attractive item made of natural fir wood.

The realistic farmhouse feeder measures seven by seven by 9.5 inches. The colorful finish makes the feeder attractive and it also protects the wood from environmental influences. The roof can be lifted to enable cleaning and easy refills. A specialized dispenser is also incorporated in the design to give birds access to just enough seeds.

Feeders

As a backyard birder with a squirrel domination problem, the constant chase was on between my furry little friends and saving my bird seed, well, for my birds. Squirrels have shown me once and for all why they always look so plump. I am truly convinced they have learned to rule the world. It wasn’t until a crisp, early summer morning I had reached my limit.

As usual the chase was on, and in expectation of the little thief scattering down the bird feeder, I was once again determined to fight for the birds. The squirrel lunged. On me. And in all my half-dressed glory, my neighbors applauded as I dramatically did a serpentine run towards my back porch.

After that, I decided to do my homework on squirrels. I researched for hours. I somehow tripped into squirrel proof bird feeders online. I felt no hesitation in purchasing a couple different kinds.

But, I Did It!

I found the best squirrel proof bird feeder. After comparing to numerous other designs and trying a few out I stayed with the Squirrel-Stopper Pole from Liberty Products. My backyard bird menagerie included four bird feeders, all of which I loved. I was able to keep them all with this amazing anti-squirrel product. I simply hung my feeders on the bird feeder pole. I cannot say enough good things about this squirrel proof product.

If you have squirrel problems and want to keep your current bird feeders then this all-in-one squirrel proof pole and baffle set is the best choice available. Here is a list of the excellent features the Liberty Squirrel-Stopper Pole:

  • Inverted cone spring-loaded free-floating baffle tilts and rocks in all directions so squirrels can't climb past it
  • Made from rust-proof, powder-coated, heavy-duty, 16-gauge steel
  • Holds 8 Feeders or combination of feeders, flower baskets, bird baths etc.
  • Each arm can hold up to 30 lbs of weight (2 arms, 60 lbs total)
  • Comes with a screw-in steel auger to firmly hold feeder in ground Fast & easy assembly - No tools required

climb this the baffle doesn’t keep still enough them to climb. This is a beautiful thing. This pole should be placed away from anything a squirrel can launch from, preferably the center of a wide open area in your yard. You can balance it by adding a few flower pots too.

Not Going to Lie…

I was so wound up over the ‘squirrel incident’ I bought one of the strange looking cage design bird feeders. The concept was so interesting to me I wanted to see if it actually would work, or even attract birds.

Best Squirrel Proof Bird Feeder - Heavy-Duty Repellent Cage Design

This squirrel proof bird feeder is made from beautiful stainless steel, kind of looks like a jail for birds, but the concept is simple and it made sense to me. I hung it on my new baffle pole and watched. I waited.

Then a beautiful thing happened, one of my toughest resident squirrels worked diligently to try to weasel out some of that golden bird seed. There was no way his little fingers could even wiggle out a bite. After sheer exhaustion, he chose to pick up seed scrapings that had fallen to the ground.

Squirrels are interesting, and entertaining. Even after super squirrel tried to hitch a ride, I still have a soft spot for them. While I was knee-deep in finding a solution for the seed thieving, I discovered another solid way to discourage them was to provide them their own special feeding platform.

They are protective little food hoarders who if given their own feeder will delight in keeping all other squirrels and predators out of their territory, which is the whole yard. So I found a win-win situation. My birds get to keep their food, I now have a ‘watch’ squirrel on patrol for the mere cost of peanuts, and I get to keep my dignity in check with the neighbors.

I just hope I picked out the right feeder for my squirrel friend
